The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) is proud to honor Amanda S. as our Volunteer of the Month for a second time. Amanda began her journey with NRS in early 2021 as a 17-year-old in East Brunswick, New Jersey, with a mission to make a difference in the lives of young people facing uncertainty. Since then, Amanda has not only continued her invaluable contributions to NRS but has also embarked on her academic journey as a freshman at Brown University. 

As a freshman at Brown, Amanda has adeptly balanced university life with various extracurricular activities. She is currently a member of the Brown Consulting Club, which organizes members into project teams working on semester-long consulting projects with real companies, such as Walmart, MLB, and The Atlantic Journal. These experiences are designed to deepen students’ understanding of the consulting field and sharpen their practical skills. Additionally, Amanda has taken on a leadership role as the Head of Design with the Intercollegiate Finance Journal and is a member of the podcast team at the Brown Daily Herald. While she has yet to declare a major, her academic pursuits are leaning towards Applied Mathematics and Economics. 

Despite the demands of university life, Amanda remains committed to NRS. Since being named Volunteer of the Month in August 2022, she has refined her approach to supporting chatters. Equipped with a framework to address diverse issues—from child abuse to financial struggles—Amanda provides essential guidance and reassurance to young people seeking support. With an increase in inquiries about transportation and the Home Free Program, Amanda offers pragmatic and empathetic insights, providing “reality checks” that are appreciated and help build trust. 

Amanda is recognized for the warmth and inclusivity she brings to the NRS volunteer team. As a more experienced volunteer, she plays a pivotal role in supporting and uplifting newer members. Amanda’s ongoing growth and dedication make her an integral part of the NRS family. Her journey continues to inspire us all to bridge the gap between academic achievement and community service, reminding us that every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the potential to significantly impact someone’s life.
